What it is like to work here

Six roles — research, research operations and publishing — each with the hours, the place, the work and what you would need to do it set out before you write.

What the work is for. At APYCF and AISSR, we bring together researchers, professionals, and emerging talents from around the world to advance scientific research, education, and public welfare. Our work focuses on addressing meaningful social challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration.

Remote, and international. Most of our positions are remote, offering the flexibility to work from different locations while collaborating with an international team. Here, you can connect with colleagues, researchers, and partners across the globe, exchange ideas, and build meaningful professional relationships beyond geographical boundaries.

What you would get out of it. We welcome individuals from diverse academic and professional backgrounds who value curiosity, independent thinking, and continuous learning. Through research projects, international collaboration, and practical experience, you can develop new skills, expand your professional network, and make a meaningful contribution to society.

Work authorisation. J-1 exchange visitor sponsorship is available for eligible full-time researchers, subject to programme eligibility and the applicable requirements. Eligible international students on OPT and CPT are welcome to apply. Every post remains subject to the work authorisation that applies to it.

Open roles

Each one states the hours and the place before the duties, and what you would need to do it after them.

Institute Researcher (any discipline)

Engagement
Employee
Where
Seattle, Washington — hybrid, or remote by arrangement
Commitment
40 hours a week
Reports to
Executive Director
  • Carry a study of your own from question to published finding, inside one of the Institute's subjects
  • Write the analysis plan before collection begins, and keep to it or record why not
  • Work across disciplines rather than within one — the Institute's questions do not respect departments
  • Publish, including the results that did not come out the way you expected

What you would need

  • A doctorate, or a master's and research you can point to
  • At least one of Excel, Python, R, SPSS, Stata, Tableau or MATLAB. Which one matters less than being able to show the working in it.
  • Enough statistics to choose a method and defend the choice: regression, group comparison, and knowing when neither applies
  • Written English a reader outside your field can follow

Research Operations Lead

Engagement
Employee
Where
Seattle, Washington — hybrid
Commitment
40 hours a week
Reports to
Executive Director
  • Own study timelines, fieldwork scheduling and collection quality across projects
  • Supervise the data collection team and review their protocol adherence
  • Prepare delivery datasets and accompanying data quality reports for researchers
  • Act as the operational contact for ethics review and participant complaints

What you would need

  • At least one of Excel, Python, R, SPSS, Stata, Tableau or MATLAB. Which one matters less than being able to show the working in it.
  • Cleaning and reshaping a messy dataset without doing it by hand twice
  • Having run fieldwork, or supervised people who did
  • Reading a protocol closely enough to spot what it leaves undefined

Data Collection Lead

Engagement
Employee
Where
Remote — Asia-Pacific
Commitment
40 hours a week
Reports to
Research Operations Lead
  • Run a collection team: assign sessions, review protocol adherence and sign off the day's records
  • Recruit and screen adult participants against each study's written eligibility criteria
  • Carry out first-pass quality checks and take anomalies to the study lead the same day
  • Keep participant identifiers separated from response data at every stage, and audit that it held

What you would need

  • At least one of Excel, Python, R, SPSS, Stata, Tableau or MATLAB. Which one matters less than being able to show the working in it.
  • Spotting a bad batch in a day's returns — duplicates, straight-lining, impossible timings
  • Supervising people you cannot see, across time zones
  • A language of the field site besides English

Psychological Measurement Lead

Engagement
Employee
Where
Remote — United States
Commitment
20 hours a week
Reports to
Research Operations Lead
  • Own instrument selection: what is validated in this population, and what only looks it
  • Run translation and back-translation checks, and the item review that follows
  • Keep the measurement documentation and codebooks current enough to hand to somebody else
  • Test measurement invariance before a cross-group comparison is reported, not after

What you would need

  • At least one of Excel, Python, R, SPSS, Stata, Tableau or MATLAB. Which one matters less than being able to show the working in it.
  • Factor analysis and reliability in practice, not only in a textbook
  • Knowing what a licensed instrument costs and what its licence forbids
  • Reading a validation paper and saying plainly whether it supports the use you intend

Consulting Statistician

Engagement
Contractor
Where
Remote
Commitment
Per engagement
Reports to
Research Operations Lead
  • Review analysis plans before data collection begins
  • Produce the agreed analyses with reproducible, versioned code
  • Document assumptions, diagnostics and limitations alongside each result

What you would need

  • R, Python, Stata or MATLAB, and code a second person can run unchanged
  • Power and sample size before collection, not a justification after it
  • Saying that a design cannot answer the question, when it cannot

Editorial Production Lead

Engagement
Contractor
Where
Remote
Commitment
Per article
Reports to
Managing Editor
  • Own production for an issue: schedule, proofs, corrections and the final files
  • Typeset accepted manuscripts into the journal's house layout
  • Return a publication PDF and an editable source file for each article
  • Apply reference and appendix formatting to the journal's standard

What you would need

  • LaTeX or InDesign, and a reference manager — Zotero, EndNote or BibTeX
  • Excel or a script for tracking an issue's articles through production
  • Catching a broken citation, a missing figure caption and a wrong running head before a reader does

How applying works

Four steps, and we tell you where you stand at each one.

Apply

Name, email, which role, a CV, and a few lines about why. takes about two minutes and sends it straight to a person. If you would rather use mail, [email protected] reaches the same place.

A first conversation

Half an hour, about the work rather than about you. You will be told at the end whether it is going further, not left to guess from silence.

A piece of real work

Short, drawn from something we actually need done, and on the same terms as the job. We do not keep what you produce if we do not take you on.

An offer, in writing

With the terms, the hours, the probation period and who you report to on it, before you are asked to decide anything.

Quick apply

For the roles on this page. Everything here goes straight to [email protected] as an email with your files attached. Nothing is stored on this site and there is no account to create.

PDF, Word, ODT, RTF or text. Up to 4 MB.
A writing sample, a portfolio, a transcript — whatever makes the case better. Up to 4 MB.
A person reads it, and you will hear either way.
